In a standard Montessori classroom, children are given a three-hour block of uninterrupted work time. This is known as the "3-Hour Work Cycle." It is during this time that the magic of deep learning occurs.
Instead of switching subjects every 45 minutes as in traditional schools, Montessori children are allowed to choose their own materials, work at their own pace, and repeat exercises as many times as they need. This lack of interruption allows them to achieve deep focus and develop concentration muscles that serve them for a lifetime.
Educators note that children typically move through three stages during this cycle: false fatigue, choice, and deep concentration. Interrupting this path disrupts the developmental loop.
